About BGS

Beckett Grading Services (BGS) is a premier trading card grading company founded in 1999 by Beckett Media, the publisher of Beckett price guides that have been the hobby's reference since the 1980s. BGS brought a unique innovation to card grading: transparent sub-grades for four key attributes — centering, corners, edges, and surface.

BGS uses a 1-10 scale with half-point increments. What sets BGS apart is the sub-grade system visible on every label, giving collectors precise insight into why a card received its grade. The coveted "Black Label" designation (BGS 10 Pristine with four 10 sub-grades) is considered the pinnacle of card grading — rarer and more valuable than a standard BGS 10.

BGS holders are known for their distinctive look and premium feel. The company also operates Beckett Card Services (BCS) for authentication-only services and has expanded into BGS Vintage for pre-1981 cards.

BGS Grading Scale

BGS uses a numeric grading scale to evaluate card condition.

Grade Label Description
10 Pristine The highest BGS grade. A flawless card with perfect centering (50/50), razor-sharp corners and edges, and a pristine surface. When all four sub-grades are also 10, the card receives the elite "Black Label" designation.
9.5 Gem Mint An outstanding card with near-perfect attributes. Sub-grades must average 9.5 or higher. This is the grade most collectors target as the sweet spot of quality and attainability.
9 Mint A superb card with only minor imperfections. Strong centering, nearly perfect corners, minimal edge wear, and clean surface. One of the most common high grades.
8.5 Near Mint-Mint+ An excellent card that falls just short of Mint. Very minor imperfections visible under close inspection. Centering within acceptable range.
8 Near Mint-Mint A high-quality card with slight wear. Minor corner touches, very light edge wear, or minor centering variance. Still a premium collectible.
7 Near Mint Noticeable but minor flaws. Slight corner wear, light edge touches, and minor surface imperfections. Still presents well overall.
6 Excellent-Near Mint Moderate wear on corners and edges. May have minor surface scratching or slight creasing. Shows signs of handling.
5 Excellent Obvious wear across multiple attributes. Moderate corner rounding, edge wear, and possible surface issues. Still a solid collectible.
4 Very Good-Excellent Heavy wear on corners and edges. May have creases or surface damage. Card is intact but has been handled significantly.
1-3 Poor to Very Good Significant damage including heavy creases, tears, staining, or major corner/edge damage. Card is identifiable but in poor condition.
